Experience
My teaching philosophy is centered around the idea that one's understanding of a concept is solidified when they are able to comprehend that concept from many different angles. This allows my students to make connections between what they are learning during their time with me, and what they have learned from previous teachers. In order to forge these connections, I begin my relationship with my students by asking them how a particular concept has been explained to them in the past. Then, I give my students an idea of how I understand the topic based upon how my teachers taught me. Finally, I relate their understanding of the material to my understanding by finding similarities between the two and, eventually, the student's comprehension of the subject has a much broader value than it did before class. I have developed this style of teaching as a high school math tutor, a second grade reading tutor, a college chemistry and math tutor, a teaching assistant, a lab instructor, and an organic chemistry tutor. I have a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Washburn University and a master's degree in synthetic organic chemistry from Northwestern. In my free time, I enjoy playing instruments such as the piano and violin, reading, and watching movies.
