Experience
Currently tutoring college level ESL students as a group and individually, primarily in academic English, grammar and mechanics, style, and conversational English. Also a Cooperative Teacher for Johnson County Adult Education (JCAE) for pre-beginning to advanced ESL students of different ages and from all over the world. Formal and informal tutor in physics, biology, chemistry, calculus, creative writing, academic writing, phonics, grammar and mechanics, English as a second language, literary criticism, beginning in high school through college and the present. Certified by International TEFL Academy ACT COMP: 29 ACT ENG: 31 ACT MATH: 30 ACT READ: 29 ACT SCIR: 27 Being a prolific reader and writer for all of my life, I have been struck by the expansiveness and mystery of language and communication. In spite of this - or perhaps because of my love for language - my personal interests and research cover a broad spectrum, and in the last year alone ranged from Quantum Electrodynamics to the significance of the Golden Ratio in the construction of the Grecian Parthenon. My experience as an independent researcher, a member of the scientific journal club, and my completion of pre-medicine prerequisites, all at the University of Kansas, has also honed my skills further in academic English. In my current teaching position through the Johnson County Adult Education program and as a private tutor, this ability to crosscut and reveal interchange across many topics using my eclectic experience is a distinct advantage. Being a student of the Latin language, as well as recently receiving TEFL certification via the International TEFL Academy, my intuition regarding English grammar and morphology is exceptional. Completion of graduate courses: C&T 820: Teaching English as a Second Language (grade: A); C&T 821: Diagnosis and Remediation of Second Languages (grade: A), with experience and personal interest in Latin, Spanish, and Mandarin Currently working on the publication of two books: "Futility in Joseph Conrad’s 'Nostromo': or, how to weep yourself out of a well", and "Dr. Craig Martin: The Myth, The Man" (working title)
